With an area of 505 990 square kilometres, Spain is the largest country in Southern Europe, the second largest country in Western Europe and the European Union (EU) and the fourth largest country in the entire European continent. It is also the sixth most populous country in Europe and the fourth in the EU. The capital and largest city is Madrid, among other major urban areas that include Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, Malaga, Bilbao and Granada.
Its territory also includes two archipelagos: the Canary Islands on the coast of Africa and the Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea. The African enclaves of Ceuta and Mellila make Spain the only European country to have a land border with an African country (Morocco).
Spain has the third largest national ensemble of World Heritage Sites recognised by Unesco.
